Section 1 - Making the Move in the Field

So the tangent is 0.823 and the arc tangent, the angle, would be 39 degrees, 27 minutes. The distance is the hypotenuse of a right triangle. So, using the Pythagorean theorem, H, equals the square root of the sum of the adjacent and opposite sides squared, or 2.6286, which rounds out to 2.63 chains.

Using this information, make the cardinal moves to the corner point, then, turn off the bearing from the corner point and measure the distance as shown.

The temp stake should be 39 degrees, 27 minutes Northeast of the corner point and exactly 2.63 chains distant. If it isn't, go back and recheck measurements made for the move.

If it is more convenient to move on the hypotenuse, the same data would apply. Then, the move from the temp would be South 39 degrees, 27 minutes West, 2.63 chains.
