You should have said that P1, the proportionate distance for the West course, is to the record distance for that course 45 as to the total retracement distance for the line, 84, is to the total record for the line, 80 chains.

 

 

 

 

From this basic formula, it is easy to compute the proportionate distance for this or any other problem which has a lost corner along a straight line. When computing the proportionate distance for a given course on a straight line, we were not satisfied to calculate just that one distance, but also did the same computation for the second course.
