  Section 1 - Practice Exercise

First break down the data into cardinal equivalents. Since the temp stake is at 39.84, it is 0.16 chains short. In latitude we have gone just 0.10 chains too far north.

This is the configuration of lines after positioning the corner West 0.16 and South 0.10 from the temp stake, but we're still not done. Again, we must calculate the true lines. This is complicated by the fact that our lines to the temp were not exactly on true cardinals. One is at North 89 degrees, 47 minutes East and the other is at North 0 degrees, 10 minutes East.

Using the Pythagorean theorem, both distances calculate to an insignificant amount longer than 40 chains.
