  Section 1- Introduction

This web based training course was developed by the Bureau of Land Management, National Training
Center. It is intended for entry-level cadastral surveyors, and for those who feel the need for a refresher in the subject. Upon completion of this self-paced course, you will be able to:

  • Describe the process for restoration of lost corners by application of the various methods of proportionate measurement.
  • Generally understand the legal background which allows BLM surveyors to apply these proportionate methods on both private and public lands.
  • Identify situations where proportionate measurement may or may not be applicable.
  • Perform the computations required to complete corner restoration using proportionate means.
  • Select and apply the correct method of proportionate measurement in given situations.

As an entry level Cadastral Surveyor, you are in the process of building your career as a Professional Land Surveyor. The decisions you make concerning the location of legal land boundaries are critical to the proper management of the Public Lands. These decisions are also important to the land owner on the other side of the boundary. There are many laws governing the work you perform and it is essential that you know and adhere to these laws in order to have a cadastral survey which will stand up under legal scrutiny. This training course covers the proper application of restoring lost corners by applying the rules of proportionate measurement. Arriving at the correct method, as outlined in The Manual, to restore a lost corner and proper application of the method will determine whether your survey will withstand a legal challenge. You want to be correct in making these decisions.

This course will provide the necessary information to help you make the correct decision and perform the necessary computations. As a professional, it is not enough to merely carry out these computations by means of a computer program. A professional fully understands the mathematics involved and thereby gains a deeper understanding of the process. For these reasons, you will be required to perform all your calculations using only a basic calculator with trigonometric functions.

In order to pursue this course, you will need the following materials:

  • The Manual of Surveying Instructions, 2009, usually referred to in this course as "the manual".
  • Traverse computation sheets. You will need to print these as you need them.
  • A scratch pad, assorted pencils and a straightedge.
  • A calculator with trigonometric capabilities is available by selecting the calculator button on the navigation bar.
