Three men and a woman working a sluice. In 1848, just one year before the discovery of gold in California, the United States obtained from Mexico, the lands that are now the states of California, Nevada, Utah, and parts of Arizona, Wyoming, and Colorado.

Five years later, in 1853, through the Gadsden Purchase, the United States acquired from Mexico what is now southern Arizona.
